Verona Golf Team Spotlight: How Indoor Practice at GPC Helped Drive a Championship Season

When the weather won’t cooperate, champions still practice. Early-season golf in New Jersey can be a grind. Cold mornings, wet ranges, and limited daylight make it tough to get meaningful reps—especially for a high school team trying to build momentum.
That’s why we loved hearing from Coach McElroy of Verona HS Golf, who brought his team into GPC to train before outdoor conditions were reliable.
Below is a quick Q&A recap of what improved, what the players loved, and how the season turned out.
What skills improved the most?
Coach McElroy said GPC was instrumental in improving ball striking.
Because the team could get in early in the season, players were able to work on full swings in a way they likely wouldn’t have been able to at the range.
What measurable results showed up?
While it’s tough to isolate improvement player-by-player, he shared that the team consistently ran match play events where players competed and had the chance to post a score.
They charted each match and saw significant improvement week by week—a big indicator of growing confidence and consistency.
What did the players like most about practicing at GPC?
Two things stood out:
- Comfort and support from the staff: “Sofia met us with a smile everyday and Marco has been one of our biggest fans.”
- Team-focused practice: Players loved having their own bay while still being able to work alongside teammates.
Coach McElroy also highlighted the convenience of practicing right in their own town, which made it easier for players to train with the team—and come back on their own time.
What facility feature made practices more effective?
Coach McElroy pointed to the size and space as a game-changer.
Even with close to 20 golfers, the team could still get a high volume of swings in.
He also called out the replay feature as a major help for analyzing and correcting technical swing issues.
How did Verona Golf finish this season?
This is the part we’re especially proud to share. Coach McElroy and Verona Golf had an incredible year:
- Finished 1st in their conference
- Won the conference tournament
- Finished 5th in the county tournament
- Finished 3rd in the state tournament
- Won the Hillbilly Panther Cup
- Finished #1 ranked team in Group One
